We have house guests--two young men in town for a conference. Over breakfast they met Matthew and Anna for the first time. Matthew loves playing language games as he learns little by little with me, sitting at the table asking, "bu ne?" (what's this) and pointing at things in the room. But he won't speak a word around nationals. So today one of our guests asked him, (in Turkish), "Do you know Turkish?" Matthew's response--he shook his head "no." Our guest laughed; Matthew gave himself away. Earlier, trying to get him to have some fun, Mike asked him, "Does kopek mean dog?" Matthew paused, cocked his head to look at Mike, and said, "Probably." Kopek was his first foreign word--learned over a year ago. When the electric went out, Matthew announced, "Something went out." I said, "The electricity?" Matthew said, "I don't know." (He does very well know.) Apparently he thinks electricity isn't English. But He freely used the word "oturma odasi" (sitting room).
